Carousel Mall about 40% gone.

Now you see it, now you don’t!

Since San Bernardino leaders marked the start of the demolition process two months ago, crews have systematically stripped the shuttered shopping center of all materials inside.

Non-hazardous debris has been separated for recycling while hazardous materials, such as asbestos and fire proofing, have been double bagged in protective containers, sealed off in containment areas with isolated ventilation systems, and removed from the property in specially sealed trucks, according to a post on the city’s Facebook page.

Interior demolition and material abatement in the main mall area and each of the former stores are ongoing, Kraus said.

At least 65% of materials from the 1-million-square-foot site must be recycled or diverted from landfills, Kraus added.
